Why does Deckard tell Rachael that she is a Replicant? What does this mean for his character?
Deckard is depicted to be this washed out ex-cop and Ridley made that clear from the beginning showing him sitting in the rain looking for a new job. When Deckard is introduced his new assignment as a Blade Runner, he seems less than optimistic. When Deckard meets Rachel and asks her the series of questions he is tasked to do, he realizes she is completely unaware of her identity. Rachael has been programmed to believe she is a real human, with parents. She carried around pictures she assumed to be from her own past, but her life was completely constructed. Deckard shows himself to be short tempered by blurting to Rachael that she is a Replicant and all of her memories have been constructed. Since she is programed, Deckard knew the exact responses to her answers because he was aware of her made up history. This scene really shows the audience that Deckard is not content with life and is not necessarily patient. But an interesting thing to note is, Deckard immediately takes back what he says once Rachel cries, an act that displays human emotion. This is the turning point in which Deckard might see Rachel beyond as just a Replicant.
