“The Work of Art in the Age of Its Technological Reproducibility”

As an artist who works in the realm of modern technology, I depend on reproducibility for my art. I found Walter Benjamin’s analysis on technology and the aura of art based of its uniqueness to be very interesting. Reproducing art is not a new phenomenon but something we have been able to enhance with inventions, such as the camera. In my art, the camera has been a powerful tool for me to tell stories and create art. I recently was assigned a project for my photo 3 class that prompted us to do a photo series based on movie scenes. To stick to my authenticity, I made artistic choices that I fear my teacher won’t understand. I thought the prompt was a fun idea but again, that idea of the “aura” will stands out to me and I want to make sure there is some value of uniqueness and creativity in my work. I think the idea from Benjamin’s work that said copies can bring out things that an original can’t was on the back of my mind during my whole project. To maintain control of my authenticity, I added my own style in costuming, color tone and overall mood of the images. I think while technology can take away the value from work through reproduction it also gives us to opportunity to go beyond traditional aspects in art, that for me as an artist is very valuable.
